Sunday evening, August 27th, in Tampa at the annual convention of the GAL Association of Florida, Angela Orkin, Executive Director of the Florida Guardian ad Litem program, named the GAL of the Year in each of the 20 Florida Judicial Circuits.

I was honored to receive the Award for the 18th Circuit (Seminole).  At the same time, Seminole County Vice Chairman, Bob Dalari, accepted the GAL Community Advocate of the Year Award on behalf of the County Commission.

However, my evening was hardly over!  Much to my amazement, I was named the Guardian ad Litem of the year for the State of Florida!

For probably the 1st time in my life, I was speechless. However, had I been able to choke back the tears, I would have said that my work in so many areas of child advocacy over the years has been a labor of love. The satisfaction I received watching my efforts assist Florida's abused, neglected and abandoned children to become productive young adults was more than enough reward!  To be publicly honored for my work with beyond my wildest dreams.

I could not have continued my work over the years (so very often personally devasting and heartbreaking) without the unfailing support and guiding hands of my wife, Chris and the Seminole and Brevard Guardian ad Litem staff and attorneys. Special thanks to the Brevard and Seminole Juvenile Dependency Magistrates and Judges...especially to my Friend and Mentor, Circuit Judge Jack Griesbaum.

Having said all that, our dependent children desperately need to have a Voice (your Voices!) as they travel the rocky road to independence in the foster care system.  Please look into your hearts and consider becoming a GAL volunteer. It is an experience that I guarantee will change your life forever as it has mine.   What's it going to be?

Please do not hesitate to contact me to talk about what you can do on behalf of our "little ones". You can make a difference.......one child at a time!

2007 National CASA Conference
Celebrating 30 Years of the CASA Cause for Abused and Neglected Children

June 9-12, 2007
Caribe Royale All-Suite Resort and Convention Center
Orlando, FL

Dear  Friends of CASA,

I hope you are making plans to join me and more than 1,300 child advocates at the 2007 National CASA Conference. It will be held June 9-12, 2007 at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, FL. This year is the 30th anniversary of the first CASA program, and I hope you can be with us to Celebrate the Solution.

Conference registration is easier than ever and is officially open online at casanet.org/conference. You can do all your conference-related planning there, including conference registration, hotel reservations and ticketing for the theme parks.

I can promise you a re-energizing and thought-provoking time. You’ll learn from top-notch faculty and hear from well known general session speakers. And you’ll have the chance to share your knowledge with and learn from colleagues from around the country.

New this year—discounts for all CASA/GAL volunteers! We are happy to offer this discount in appreciation of all the work our volunteers have done for abused and neglected children over the last three decades. Active CASA/GAL volunteers will receive $50 off the full conference registration rate. Volunteers are at the center of our work for children, and we hope to have a tremendous turnout for this celebration.

Orlando is a great place to take your family, so have them join you and make it an even bigger occasion.

All of us at the National CASA Association look forward to seeing you in Orlando in June.

Warm Regards,

Michael S. Piraino

Chief Executive Officer

National CASA Association

P.S. Please share this invitation with colleagues who may be interested in attending the National CASA Conference. You can join our mailing list to be notified of the most up-to-date conference information by emailing staff@nationalcasa.org. Please put "Conference Mailing List" in the subject line.
